Service Learning : Food Bank
Volunteering at the Food Bank.
Contact Info : Alissa Jones (425) 745-1635
Hours : 5.5 hours
Purpose : The purpose of this organization is to give back to the community and help families in need of food.
My duties in this was to pack carts based on family size, (small, medium and large). I helped organize the cart and then it will go out to the families and help re organize food that comes back based on the type of food.

I think this is important to our society to help one another. Although there's evolution and survival to the fittest. I think in an environment, we all work together to benefit one another. I personally did not know that this food bank had a system and ran on such a large scale. I think 200-300 people would come to the food bank to get food for their families. I've volunteered at another food bank but it was extremely small. However, this one had a system and was somewhat like an assembly line. I think that this can relate to ecology because we as people are adapting to this situation where our community needs help and we are donating and helping out others. It sort of reminds me of a mutualistic relationship where both sides. Personally, I only came to volunteer for school but I intend to stay and volunteer all summer because I think it's a good way to give back and meet people to open up your mind. I know this isn't super science related but this is like the domino effect or ripple effect, where if we effect a group in our community it will affect another. For example, volunteering it has helped students get their hours, community service hours from court, socializing, or they have free time. This affects 4-5 different groups and brings us together for a greater goal.
Questions?
1. How long has the food bank been open?
2. How long did it take for them to figure out this system that they have now?
3. How many people does it take to operate the food bank?
4. Will the food bank expand more if our community grows as well?

I volunteered at the Everett VOA food bank and had a similar experience. It was amazing to see how many individuals and families the food bank helps every month. I spent one of my shifts working in the warehouse and it was amazing to see how much food we packaged in a day (12 pallets each containing boxes three across and four high) every box had to be roughly 38-50lbs, it was shocking to see the amount of food the food bank processes in a day, much less a month.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more that it is important for our society to help each other. Giving back to the community shows good character and makes you realize that you were able to make a difference in the world.
